21 Aimags: Which One Should You Live In?

Seven questions about your lifestyle — nature or city, winters or adventure, career or community — matched against the real data profiles of Mongolia's 21 aimags.

Mongolia has 21 aimags and one capital city. Each has a distinct character shaped by geography, economy, ethnicity, and climate. Bayan-Ulgii in the far west is Kazakhstan-influenced, eagle-hunting country. Umnugovi in the south is mining wealth and desert silence. Khuvsgul in the north is forests, the great lake, and the coldest winters outside of Siberia. Most Mongolians never seriously consider living anywhere other than Ulaanbaatar. But the data suggests your actual personality might be a better match somewhere else entirely. Answer seven questions. Find out where you belong.

No aimag is objectively 'best.' Umnugovi has the highest average household income in Mongolia outside Ulaanbaatar — driven by the Oyu Tolgoi and Tavan Tolgoi mining operations — but it also has the least annual rainfall, the most extreme temperature range, and the fewest trees per capita of any province on Earth. Khuvsgul has extraordinary natural beauty and is home to the Tsaatan reindeer herders, but winter temperatures drop to -50°C and internet connectivity is sparse. Bayan-Ulgii preserves Kazakh language and culture virtually intact — more than 90% of residents are ethnic Kazakh — but it is the farthest aimag from Ulaanbaatar by road. Every aimag is a trade-off. The quiz does not judge the trade-offs; it identifies which ones match yours.

Methodology

Methodology Aimag profiles are built from NSO 2024 socioeconomic data, NAMHEM climate normals (1991–2020 baseline), and Ministry of Environment protected area data. Quiz scoring: each of 7 questions maps user preference to one or more of 5 aimag dimensions (climate, economy, nature, community, culture). User scores are compared against normalized aimag dimension profiles using cosine similarity. The top 3 matching aimags are presented as results. This is an exploratory tool — it does not account for all factors relevant to residential decisions, and does not include Ulaanbaatar as an option since the tool is designed to surface alternatives to the capital.
